Ishbor

gathering moss

origin: traveler
nature: creative
boundary: frozen basin
size: round
nature feature: Ptychostomum cryophilum
biome: plains
meta origin: nursery MYO

you are free to draw and write about this esk!

Relationships:

  • Vetru - transformed by them. An amiable relationship, but not especially close. They can sometimes get into deep chats about beautiful things, like a couple of art appreciators, but they never talk about themselves.

Appearance:

About the size of a farm pig, and a bit chubby for an esk. His fur is short and curly on his body, but his tail is longer. His legs are stubby and his face blockish. His nature feature is ruddy, springy moss framing his neck like a lion’s mane. His fur closer to the moss is orangeish-brown and gradually lightens to a sort of straw color. His butt is the lightest part of him, almost blonde. His eyes are shaped in such a way that he always looks a bit like he’s smiling–a round top and flat bottom.

Personality:

A meanderer and a dreamer. His favorite activity is just sitting and watching the world, at the slow pace of a rock gathering moss. He’ll happily share his observations and thoughts about beauty and life, like any artistic soul, but he’s ultimately kind of a loner. He doesn’t know how to connect with other esk. Perhaps he watches a bit too much and does a bit too little. He’s naive, but endearingly so.

Strengths:

Bright-eyed, refreshing, has a sweet and charming outlook on the world, artistic (but doesn’t actually make things – that takes diligence which he does not have at all), optimistic, finds something to appreciate in everyone and everything, very tender and kind, loves things wholeheartedly, not fussed at all about presenting himself in any way that isn’t just being himself

Weaknesses:

Naive, slow paced regardless of a situation’s urgency, out of touch, bad at social cues, loner, a bit too soft, doesn’t adapt well to seriousness or to other people’s negative emotions, not enterprising at all, tends to just coast through life, profoundly lonely but trying not to notice, easy to take advantage of, in some ways he’s always stuck in the same place without realizing it, likes to watch the world but has more trouble actually engaging with it, on some level he feels woefully unequipped for life so he admires life from afar, a late bloomer

Notes about his nature feature:

  • Ptychostomum mosses have an almost cosmopolitan distribution, meaning they're found all over the world. Like Ishbor, they are commonplace and unextraordinary, but hardy and easily pleased.

  • Ptychostomum cryophilum in particular is found in the nothern, subpolar climates of North America.

  • Mosses are often the first plants to flourish in an area, and their moisture-absorbing properties create a more amenable substrate for other plants to grow in. Mosses that grow on trees will similarly help the tree regulate and transport water in addition to the tree's own vascular system. In other words: mosses are helpers. They're friendly and can help others grow, in their own humble way.

  • Various indigenous nations in the Pacific Northwest sometimes used mosses as insulation in their homes and clothing. Medicinally, the absorbant properties of moss were also helpful for diapers and menstrual padding. Again, mosses playing a humble, perhaps even forgettable, role that is nevertheless deeply important. Ishbor is exactly this type of personality, or has the potential to be. He is easily dismissed or even sneered at, but his role quietly helps others thrive.

Notes about his boundary:

Ishbor protects a large basin in a meadow in Alaska. During the summer and late spring, the basin contains a small pond, but this quickly freezes and turns to snow slush in mid-fall. The winters have been getting progressively colder over the years, and many of the more delicate flora and fauna in the area have had trouble maintaining their usual cycles as a result. He has a slight fear of winter's encroaching darkness... So far up north, the winter days have very little sunlight, and he finds himself lonely and, secretly, privately, depressed. Oh how he lives for spring!

MOTE

light on the windowsill

you are free to draw and write about this esk!

Relationships:

  • None yet! He spends much time quietly alone.

Appearance:

Mote is tiny, about the size of a tennis ball when he curls up to rest. His fur is very downy and soft, like a baby blanket, and the white fluff around his neck is somehow even softer. A squishy little lad. He has a manx tail that sometimes waggles. Sprigs of baby's breath stick out all willy nilly from his mane, like the crooked whiskers of an old cat. He is a light gray color, with white spots on his shoulders and flanks, and soft black splotches at his feet and snout, like he's been poking through soot. His eyes are beady and he has two white spots almost like eyebrows. Most notably, a perpetual candle lives on top of his head, dripping seemingly infinite wax that does not burn him. He has a small flame that he's very protective of. His ears are big and rabbit-y and prone to twitching nervously.

Personality:

He is an anxious sort, but can you blame him? He's such a small, soft soul in an enormous world. If you can actually get him to participate in a conversation rather than just listening, it turns out he has a great capacity for holding love in that tiny heart of his. He's deeply sweet and attentive to people and objects. He decorates his windowsill boundary with a quiet sense of gratitude and pride. He is often alone, but surprisingly not particularly lonely. He feels safest when he's alone.

Strengths:

Gentle, attentive, methodical, sweet-hearted, curious, has a lot more confidence in himself and his place in the world than he might seem to, despite being tiny and seemingly expendable he knows deeply that the space he takes up with himself is important, diligently tends to hope, unknowingly guides others into hope as well, a light in the dark

Weaknesses:

Anxious and fidgety, easily startled, takes awhile to warm up to others, has difficulty contributing to conversations beyond listening, sometimes can be very particular and type A especially about his things, plans ahead and dislikes surprises, fussy, homebody

Notes about his nature feature:

  • Many species of baby's breath are highly ornamental. They have been cultivated by humans for centuries, often decoratively and in bouquets, usually as a more background flower to help highlight the showier ones. It is also sometimes used for herbal remedies and detergents. One species is even used in desserts and cheeses--luxurious, no?

  • The genus name Gypsophilia refers to "a lover of chalk" which is the rocky, mountainous substrate where the plant most commonly grows in the wild.

  • The name "baby's breath" might be a whimsical response to the cloud-like clusters of tiny white flowers, or it may refer to the flowers' smell, which is a bit like old milk.

  • In Victorian flower correspondences, baby's breath is meant to signify everlasting love or a sense of innocence.

Notes about his boundary:

Mote haunts a dusty windowsill in an abandoned attic room. He's not sure how he got here, or who used to live here, but he considers it his home now. The attic is above a tacky gift shop in a small tourist trap town by the coast. He will sometimes work up the courage to go on adventures into town or along the beach, which is rocky and cold. Honestly his favorite place is just his spot at the windowsill. He decorates it with trinkets from his humble travels, and stays warm when the winter snow comes.

Notes about his elemental:

The candle is always dripping, often into his fur but sometimes he'll also leave little wax globs trailing after him. His flame can flicker and go out sometimes but always comes back. He hates when it goes out, so he will be fussy and very careful about his environment to make sure it is taken care of. The flame seems to be loosely related to himself or his mood. When it's particularly strong and bright, this tends to correspond with particularly good days he's having. The flame also gets smaller and dimmer the farther he is from his boundary and from developed biomes, so he tends to stay close to home. If he's far enough in a wilderness unlike home, his whole candle might even be gone, and he'll be very out of sorts indeed.

my soul sings a song so sweet and pure. i've felt it all along but now I'm sure
